On Chapters, Timing, and Letting Go of Comparison

683 words, 4 minutes read time.
We’ve all heard the phrase:
“Don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 20.”
It’s well-intentioned, but if I’m honest, it never quite landed for me.
Over time, I’ve realized why. It still assumes there’s something to be measured between chapters. So, I’d like to take the idea a step further and say:
Don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 1.
Don’t compare their Chapter 20 to your Chapter 20.
Because even in books, chapters might share the same number, but they’re not the same story.
Every book has its own pace, its own lessons, and its own timing.
Even books within the same genre, covering similar themes, unfold in completely different ways. One might linger in early chapters, building depth and nuance. Another may move quickly, with sharp turns and rapid growth. And neither is wrong or better than. They’re just different.
The same is true for us.
The Myth of “Similar Stage, Similar Experience”
We might subconsciously assume that people in the same phase of life, career, or healing path are experiencing something similar. But the human experience and journey is far more complex than that.
Two people can be in the same place, at the same time, in the same industry, or even within the same family and still be navigating entirely different inner landscapes. All you have to do is look at studies carried out with identical twins to learn about this phenomenon.
Our nervous systems, histories, responsibilities, capacities, and support systems all shape how we move through growth and healing. What feels like a breakthrough for one person might feel super overwhelming for another. What looks like “slow progress” from the outside might be deep, necessary integration on the inside.
So when we compare, we often disconnect from what our own body and energy are asking for.
Healing Doesn’t Follow a Shared Timeline
Healing, growth, and purpose don’t move in straight lines, and they most certainly don’t follow a universal schedule.
Sometimes healing feels and looks like momentum and clarity while other times it looks like rest, pause, or quiet un-learning.
Comparison can cause us to want to rush the process or paralyze us from taking action altogether. It pulls us out of presence and into pressure or force. But as I’ve learned from experience, healing (i.e. the body and mind) does not respond well to force. It will push back with a “heck no!”. Instead, the body, the mind, and your energy flow slowly opens up when there’s safety, patience, and space to listen to its needs with compassion.
This is something I see often in my work. People arrive feeling like they should be “further along,” or wondering why their journey doesn’t resemble someone else’s. Gently, we begin to shift that perspective back toward the body, back toward their own rhythm.
Honouring Your Own Story
In the end, I guess the message was never really about comparing Chapter 1 to Chapter 20. It’s more about remembering that chapters were never meant to be compared at all in the first place.
So, trust that your story is unfolding exactly as it’s meant to. Its pace is intentional and its lessons are uniquely yours.
And when comparison inevitably creeps in – because if you’re human, it absolutely will – notice that and pause.
Try to see if you can notice it without judgment, and remind yourself of the utter vastness of the human experience. Then, see if you can reframe things back to honouring your own story.
Wherever you are in your own story – whether its at the beginning of a new one, in the middle of a long-standing one, or in a chapter that feels unclear – you are not behind. The universe doesn’t work that way. You’re simply becoming, in the way that’s right and meant for you in this life.
And if you’re in a chapter where you’re seeking support, whether through grounding, integration, or simply a space to slow down – my role is simple: to meet you where you are, and support you along the way.
