As more people are looking to take control of their overall wellbeing – of mind, body, and soul – as well as practitioners in the wellness field to work with in achieving this goal, it’s natural to feel both excited and a little apprehensive about trying new wellness modalities. If you’re curious about reflexology but unsure of what to expect during your first session, you’re in the right place! This guide will walk you through the entire process, from the moment you arrive to the end of your session, helping you feel comfortable and prepared.

Wait, What is Reflexology?

Before diving into what to expect, let’s briefly review: what is reflexology? Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy based on the theory that there are specific points or “reflexes” on the feet, hands, or ears, which correspond to different organs and systems in the body. This practice of working over various reflex points promotes relaxation, improves circulation, clears congestion, and helps to balance the body’s natural energies.

Now that we have a super basic overview of reflexology, what does an initial session entail? Let’s take a look at what typically happens before, during, and after your first session.

Before Your Session:

  • Scheduling your appointment: When booking your first session, you will need to communicate any health concerns or conditions with your reflexologist. This will allow them to tailor the session to your needs. It is not uncommon for the first session to be longer than subsequent visits to consider time for discussion about your specific health and wellness profile as well as more comprehensive note taking of observations during the first session.
  • What to wear: Clients typically aim to dress comfortably. Reflexology primarily focuses on the feet or hands, but it’s important to feel relaxed and at ease in your clothing. You do not need to remove any clothing except socks when working the feet. Some jewellery may need to be removed such as rings or bracelets/anklets.

Arriving at Your Appointment:

  • Intake and consultation: Upon arrival, your reflexologist will conduct a consultation and intake to understand your health history, lifestyle, any specific issues you’d like to address, and what you hope to gain from the sessions. Your reflexologist will explain in more detail how reflexology works and what to expect, and you will sign a consent form. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions or express any concerns. You should feel comfortable communicating with your practitioner and having all of your questions answered.
  • The atmosphere: The environment will be calm and peaceful, typically with soothing music and soft lighting to help you relax. You will typically be in a reclined position, or laying down on a massage table.

During Your Session:

  • The process: Your reflexologist will begin by gently cleansing your feet or hands. They will assess the feet or hands (ex: for cuts, rashes, sores, calluses, etc.) and will ask about any painful areas that could impact treatment. The treatment begins with a light massage then moves into applying pressure to specific reflex points on your feet or hands. The pressure will vary, and you may feel tenderness in certain areas, which is completely normal and simply indicates that there could be an imbalance or congestion in this area. The reflexologist will monitor your reactions and general state throughout the session, however direct feedback from you is also encouraged.
  • Relaxation: It’s normal to feel a deep sense of relaxation, and some people fall asleep. You can rest or talk during the session, and if you do fall asleep, not to worry, as you will still receive the benefits of the treatment.
  • What you may feel: During the session, you may experience various sensations such as tingling, hot or cold sensations, digestive grumbles, thirst, urges to sigh, coughing, tender areas, or even laughing or crying (emotional release). These sensations are often a sign that your body is responding to the treatment. What you feel during a session varies from person to person and from session to session, but generally you can expect to feel a deep sense of relaxation and a lightness afterwards. Some people feel energy moving from certain reflex points on the hands or feet to other parts of their body. Some people get goosebumps as the nervous system is attempting to rebalance and clear congestion.
  • The focus: The main goal of reflexology is to treat the body as a whole. Treating the whole body is important in helping the body maintain homeostasis- a state of balance among all body systems that is needed for it to function optimally. In other words, balance of all systems is required to allow the body to heal itself. So, regardless of the health issues you may present, a full reflexology session will usually be completed to address all of the internal organs and glands, as well as muscle groups, bones, and all systems. If you have a specific concern, such as headaches, your reflexologist will pay particular attention to the corresponding direct and indirect areas linked to your concerns. If your reflexologist encounters certain markers such as tenderness, calluses, or tightness during the session, they will work these areas more thoroughly and may revisit these areas before the end of the treatment.
  • Reflexologist notetaking and treatment planning: During the first session especially, you might notice your reflexologist taking notes or jotting down observations of your hands or feet before, during (if appropriate) and after the session. Having that initial consultation as well as noting what they notice on your hands or feet will be essential for your reflexologist in creating an effective plan of care to use for future sessions.

After Your Session:

  • What you may feel: After a session, it’s very common to feel a deep sense of relaxation. You may feel more refreshed, and even energized. With foot reflexology, clients often say they feel like they’re “walking on air”. It’s common to just feel an overall sense of well-being, and it’s important to take a moment to enjoy this feeling!
  • Reactions after treatments: Some common reactions after a treatment include increased energy, enhanced sleep, increased mobility in joints, and pain relief.  You may also experience a variety of “cleansing and detoxing” reactions. During and after a session, the body is attempting to cleanse itself by releasing toxins. If you experience any symptoms, they usually disappear within 24-48 hours. Normal reactions include: more frequent bowel movements or urination, emotional release (ex: crying or irritability), increased mucous discharge, increased flatulence, fatigue/listlessness, or feeling cold. These responses do not happen to everyone but are normal and vary from individual to individual.
  • Self-care: Your reflexologist may provide some aftercare advice, such as staying hydrated and paying attention to how your body feels in the hours and days following the session. This feedback can be useful for tailoring future sessions to your needs. Some reflexologists will have water available to offer you right after a session.

  • What your reflexologist does: Your reflexologist will spend time creating a plan of care for subsequent visits using all of the information gathered in the first session with you. These plans include specific groups of reflexes the reflexologist will focus on in addition to the full body treatment that specifically address your personal wellness needs and concerns. These plans take time to craft, as they are tailored to each individual client and also help your reflexologist measure any changes over time.

Your first reflexology session is a step toward better health and wellness. By knowing what to expect, you can walk into your appointment with confidence and leave feeling rejuvenated.
