Considerations and tips for protecting your energy – AKA energy hygiene

As an energy healer, it is common place to talk about energy protection and energy hygiene, but people may not be aware that it often comes up in a not so obvious way. A person enters the treatment room feeling depleted. Perhaps frazzled or feeling scattered. Brain fog or just feeling “not themselves”. A feeling of being “all over the place”. Exhausted. Heaviness. Although there can be various reasons for these things, it may be a sign for me as an energy healing practitioner that things are energetically “off”. That there might be things that are that the client is carrying with them that is not theirs. Some people come to me and know right away that they are carrying ‘ish that isn’t theirs. They are aware that they tend to take on other people’s stuff. Often telling me they are empaths or sensitive to other people’s energy.

After we take time to clear and heal what does not belong during sessions with clients, the question after and in between sessions is often: “How can I protect my energy moving forward”? or “What can help ensure that I’m not taking on other people’s stuff?”.

So I thought it would be helpful to start a general list for people to refer to, as it can be empowering for people to learn about small things they can do to protect their energy and in turn, protect their peace by standing more firmly and grounded in their own energy. We can also call this energy hygiene, as it involves not only protecting but also cleansing our energy fields.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of considerations and options that may help protect your energy. Over time I may add or adjust certain items to this list.

1. Ask your guides and visualize a shield.

First, if you are aware you will be entering into a potentially intense, heavy, or draining space or situation, feel free to ask your guides from the greatest and highest of good for safety and protection, and take a moment to visualize a form of energetic shield around the physical body and your aura. Some people use a bubble, others use water, golden or white light, or a rock for example.

    2. Practice Metta as protection

If there is a tough, heavy, or challenging conversation or interaction, before or after, you may choose to wish the person some Metta (loving kindness) and repeat these three phrases a few times: “May they be happy, may they be peaceful, and may they be free from suffering”. Metta is considered very high quality and protective energy. Wishing yourself Metta is also encouraged :)

    3. Crystals

Certain crystals can be helpful as well for protection. There are honestly many, so it’s up to you which you’d like to use. Ones that come to mind are tourmaline (think “bodyguard”), selenite (think “cleanser), hematite (think: “anchor”), and obsidian (think: “psychic shield”) . Please make sure your crystals are cleansed and charged properly so they can function optimally.

    4. Use water to cleanse

A shower at the end of the day/event and setting the intention to wash away any energies that don’t belong to you is another strategy. Salt baths can be great for this as well (ex: Epsom salt).

    5. Feet on the earth!

Touch some grass! Put your feet in the dirt! Connecting with the Earth’s energy and using the breath to exhale any energies that are not yours and for your greatest and highest good into the Earth. She is a strong, sturdy, powerful energy that can take what’s released and transmute the energies.

    5. Try a visualization

Finally, if you feel you have taken on a lot of other people’s “stuff”, there’s a visualization I am sometimes called to use during Reiki, but you could also do this at the end of your day as needed:

Imagine yourself as a tree, with all different types of leaves that don’t belong to you. They don’t “fit”. These leaves represent everyone else’s energy that you’ve taken on. After noticing this, imagine 3 gusts of wind blowing through your branches (I like to use a nice deep breath to represent each gust of wind) and each gust is taking away those leaves that don’t belong to you. The goal is to not carry these leaves anymore that did not belong to you in the first place, and the energies they carry are being transmuted for healing.

Then, notice the bare branches where those leaves once were. You can imagine 3 more gusts of wind (again, pairing with deep breaths if you’d like) and with each gust, you see your leaves coming back to you. These leaves represent your own energy that you may have given away (think of how people can sometimes give away their own energy when trying to help and support others for instance). With each gust/breath, notice your branches getting fuller again until they are completely full with your own beautiful, bright, healthy leaves. Notice how good it feels to have your leaves and no one else’s – everything belongs, it feels right, it feels comfortable.

Just bask in this more balanced, grounded energy for a few moments.

    Hope this helps.💖🙏
